1) Karl, Strafrechtslehrer, * Frankfurt am Main 4. 6. 1841, ✝ Freiburg im Breisgau 7. 4. 1920, Vater von 2); Professor in Basel, Freiburg im Breisgau, Straßburg und (1873-1913) in Leipzig. Binding war der Führer der an der Vergeltungstheorie festhaltenden klassischen Schule im Strafrecht und ein scharfer Gegner der durch F. von Liszt vertretenen soziologischen Richtung, die den Präventionsgedanken in den Vordergrund stellte; schuf die rechtsdogmatischen Grundlagen der Euthanasie.
 
Werke: Die Normen und ihre Übertretung, 4 Bände (1872-1919); Die Schuld im deutschen Strafrecht (1919).

 2) Rudolf Georg, Schriftsteller, * Basel 13. 8. 1867, ✝ Starnberg 4. 8. 1938, Sohn von 1); studierte Medizin und Rechtswissenschaft, war Kavallerieoffizier; als Lyriker und Erzähler wurde er angeregt durch G. D'Annunzio, aber auch durch C. F. Meyer und G. Keller. Seine v. a. zwischen den Weltkriegen sehr erfolgreichen Werke feiern in neoklassizistischer Formstrenge Heroismus und Opfer, auch im nationalistischen Sinn.
 
Werke: Erzählerisches: Legenden der Zeit (1909); Die Geige (1911, darin: Opfergang); Keuschheitslegende (1919); Unsterblichkeit (1921); Moselfahrt aus Liebeskummer (1932); Wir fordern Reims zur Übergabe auf (1935).
 
Autobiographisches: Erlebtes Leben (1928; unter dem Titel Unvergängliche Erinnerung, 1964).
 
Essays: Reitvorschrift für eine Geliebte (1926); Reife und Reden (1928); Die Spiegelgespräche (1933); Natur und Kunst (herausgegeben 1939).
